Good to know: Assist is only available to Mansfield District Council tenants. The standard service is £7.58 a week and an enhanced service with weekday wellbeing checks is £11.92 a week, with no minimum contract. The council closed its Lifeline service for private customers in January 2025 and transferred them to Newark and Sherwood District Council's Careline, which covers Mansfield at £26 a month plus a £25 installation fee. Nottinghamshire County Council's telecare service on 0300 500 80 80 is for people with eligible needs and does not usually provide a basic pendant alarm on its own.
Before installation: The service is provided after an assessment to identify individual needs.

Mansfield is a district council. Care needs assessments and adult social care in Mansfield are run by Nottinghamshire County Council. Mansfield runs its own alarm service, so start there. If your parent might qualify for a free alarm through a care assessment, ask Nottinghamshire as well.
What to say when you call
Call 01623 463076 and read this out:
I'd like to request a community alarm / telecare assessment for my parent.
Then tell them, briefly:
- whether your parent lives alone;
- whether they have had a fall or feel unsteady;
- any benefits they get (Pension Credit, Attendance Allowance, Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support);
- whether they've recently been in hospital.
If the first person can't help, ask for adult social care or Assist . Ask two questions before you hang up: "What will it cost each week?" and "How long is the wait?"
Who usually qualifies
Rules differ between councils, but the pattern is the same across the UK. An alarm is more likely to be free, or arranged quickly, if your parent:
- lives alone, or is alone for much of the day
- has had a fall or is unsteady on their feet
- gets Pension Credit or another income-related benefit
- has just come out of hospital or had a care needs assessment
