Free Alarm Check is free to use and has no adverts. We earn money in one way: if you click a link to Taking Care on this site and go on to buy an alarm, Taking Care pays us a fixed commission through the Awin affiliate network.

• The price you pay is exactly the same as if you'd gone to their website directly.
• We don't see who you are or what you bought — only that a sale happened.
• Every affiliate link is labelled, with the disclosure line directly above it, and is marked for search engines as sponsored.
• The affiliate link appears on three kinds of page only: the check result, the comparison, and the Taking Care review (plus the "if you'd rather not wait" box on council pages). Nowhere else.

Does it affect what we recommend?

We recommend Taking Care because of its Age UK partnership, its no-contract terms and its accredited response centre. We'd say the same if there were no commission. Where it's beaten — usually on price — we say so on the comparison page, and we link to the competitors' own websites.

More importantly, the free council option is shown first on every result, even when our verdict is that a private alarm is quicker. If every visitor got a free council alarm and we earned nothing, the site would have done its job.

What we don't do

• No paid placements. No company can pay to appear higher in the comparison.
• No sponsored content.
• No selling or sharing of your data. We don't collect email addresses or require an account.
